Poetry By Heart 2015

Launceston College’s fourth Poetry By Heat competition was another exceptional quality event. In front of an intelligent and discerning sixth from audience eleven students showed courage and considerable skill in reciting a range of poems from the national Poetry By Heart website.

At Key Stage 3 students were competing for the Caroline Dickenson Cup with Causley’s Jenny Davies’ performance of Lights Out, by Edward Thomas, proving successful. In second place was Trevithick’s former champion Kate Soddy, with Rescorla’s Imogen Tate in third.

At Key Stage 4 the prize was a place in the Cornwall County Final – with a potential weekend at Cambridge University for the winner. This was a close run competition for the four students involved, each who had to recite two poems. In fourth place was Causley’s Elizabeth Tincombe, in third place Rescorla’s Ellie Fish, in second place Rescorla’s Gabriella Asman and in first place Rescorla’s Coral Benfield. Coral performed Oscar Wilde’s The Ballad of Reading Gaol and John Betjeman’s The Arrest of Oscar Wilde at the Cadogan Hotel.
