Maths Learning to Learn
On 31st January Year 9 took part in their maths Learning to Learn day.
Pupils were asked to plan the relief aid for a fictitious tsunami along the South-American Pacific coast. The project was centred on Concepción, Chile’s second largest urban conurbation. This was the scene of an actual tsunami in 1960, after an earthquake off the Chilean coast. Pupils considered a variety of facts and then used various proportional reasoning strategies to estimate how many people were affected by the disaster. The they calculated what food, water and shelter were needed and how it could all be transported. Throughout the day pupils were encouraged to reflect on the problem and whether the mathematical assumptions that were made were appropriate.
