Friday Briefing – 20 November 2020
This week has seen us successfully support children to continue their learning. Students have adjusted well to the new mask wearing protocols in College and I have received lots of positive feedback from staff, students and parents following the Year 11 online parent teacher meetings last week. I am delighted it worked so well and would like to thank everyone who took the time to contact me with comments, it is much appreciated. We have made an adjustment to the front page of our website this week; you will notice a new important notices tab which should make the key information we want to share with you easier to find. This week we have also been able to introduce socially distanced assemblies for Year 8 and Year 9, two tutor groups at a time by House. This will be repeated for Year 7 next week. The assemblies allow for students to connect directly with their Head of House and enable Heads of House to promote key messages about learning expectations and support available for students. Most importantly the assemblies have provided a welcome opportunity to share good news stories and to praise the good work the students have been doing. We plan to roll out the assemblies to key stage 4 in the weeks that follow.
SIMS Parent App
Each year we are legally required to ask you to review the contact information we hold for all students. The most efficient way for us to keep this data up to date is through the use of the SIMS Parent App. If you have not already signed up to the app then you will be sent an invitation email in the next few days so that you can view and make any changes to this data. If for any reason you are unable to sign up to the parent app or require a paper copy of the Data Collection Sheet the please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01566 772468.
Sixth Form applications are now open
Year 11 had a really productive IAG lesson on Tuesday and are now welcome to apply to the Sixth Form via the online application form on the College website. All information on all courses offered in the Sixth Form can also be found on the website along with a promotional video. We are sorry that we have not been able to invite you into College for our Sixth Form Open Evening this year but we will continue to make every effort possible to provide students with the information they need to best support their important progression decisions. An impressive 12 applications were waiting for Mr Rush by Wednesday morning! The first Sixth Form interviews will take place during the second week in December.
Year 12 and 13 Parent Teacher Meetings
The first Parent Teacher Meeting for Year 12 and Year 13 students will be on Thursday 3rd December from 3.30 – 6.30pm. The appointments this year will be online and full instructions on how to book appointments will be emailed to parents next week. A second opportunity for parents to speak with subject teachers will be held later in the year on Thursday 11th March.
Support for Families
I have attached some information below relating to Government funding for families struggling as a result of Coronavirus. They are encouraging families to contact the local council to find out what services and help is available. It has also been announced that any child in receipt of Free School Meals will receive additional support over the Christmas holidays and also the Easter and Summer holidays next year. We will share more definite information when it is published by County. Any families who wish to apply for free school meals can do so online at https://www.cornwall.gov.uk/education-and-learning/schools-and-colleges/school-meals/
I remain grateful to all Launceston College families for their ongoing support and understanding and wish you all a relaxing weekend.
