Friday Briefing – 13 November 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

Thank you for supporting your child to wear a face mask in College following the new guidance released by the Government. Masks are easily misplaced so we would really appreciate your child carrying a spare if possible.

On Wednesday 11th November, the College marked Remembrance Day with a minute’s silence. Thank you to Harry Japes and Theo Hosking for their parts in this.

Online Parent Teacher Meetings – Virtual Meetings

Thank you to all Year 11 parents who attended the College’s first virtual parent teacher meeting yesterday evening. We hope this process worked well for you and would welcome any feedback to help support future events.

The dates for the remaining Parent Teacher Meetings for this academic year are as follow:

3rd December               Sixth Form

10th December             Year 7

7th January                   Year 10

11th February               Year 9 options information

25th February               Year 9

11th March                    Sixth Form

22nd April                      Year 8

Year 7

We will shortly send Year 7 parents/carers an invitation to the Parent Teacher Meeting on Thursday 10th December 3.30- 6pm. This will give you adequate time to book your appointments. This will be a virtual meeting and will take place via a video link, using our parent’s evening system. If it is your first time using this system please do not worry, logging on and booking is really easy and can all be done using the link in the invitation letter.

We are in the process of setting target bands for students in Year 7 and in the absence of SATs scores from Year 6 we will use the CAT scores and recent assessments from September. Once this process has been completed we will then begin to set students in English, maths and science. New timetables will be issued to students to reflect any change of teacher and room. CAT scores will also be sent to you for your information.

We will also be carrying out another thumbprint session to capture the thumbprints of Year 7 students whose parents/carers gave permission. Apologies if anyone got missed on the first round. Please be reassured that students can still access their accounts and give their names in the canteen until their thumbprints are working.

Year 11 Progression into the Sixth Form

Over the last 3 weeks the Sixth Form team and subject leaders have been engaging with Year 11 during their IAG lessons promoting the options that are available to students next year in the Sixth Form. During their IAG lesson next Tuesday the Sixth Form team will be holding a launch event to mark the start of the application process. A short promotional video will be available on our website and students will have the opportunity to collect a folder of information on courses they are interested in, and get answers to any queries they may have about the Sixth Form. Online applications will be open as from next Tuesday 17th November and the form will be available on our website http://www.launceston-college.cornwall.sch.uk/sixth-form/application-form-3/ . We are aiming to have our first round of interviews for students during the second week in December and we are working hard to make sure that parents will have the opportunity to attend these interviews as well, should they choose to do so.

Finally, congratulations to all students elected as Tutor Representatives in Years 7, 8 and 9 and to those students in Years 10 and 11 elected to leadership positions within their House.

Kind regards,

Jenn Burn
Principal
