FAO Year 9 Parents – Options Information
Over the next few months students in Year 9 will choose the subjects they will study during Key Stage 4. In September 2021, students entering Year 10 will begin two-year courses that will result in them achieving valuable qualifications for further education, training or apprenticeships. We therefore want to ensure students create personalised timetables that are broad and balanced. Students should take their time in making these important decisions and seek advice from tutors, subject staff and others in College.
Students should make their options choices based upon individual interests, aptitudes and aspirations. Launceston College, even through our present lockdown, will look to support all parents and students with this process every step of the way. We have adjusted this term’s planned options events and IAG lessons to ensure we provide the support required.
An online presentation about the options process is now available on the College website, in the Parents section. Progress Updates were issued to parents at the end of the Autumn term, and there will be an opportunity to discuss student options with subject teachers at the Year 9 Parent Teacher Meetings on Thursday 25th February. Tutors are also working with students remotely on a daily basis every morning and during IAG time on a Tuesday. Further to this, the ‘Learning Reflection and Development’ day on 18-19th March will be an opportunity to meet tutors and discuss the suitability of choices made. Please feel free to discuss these important decisions with key staff at any point, you do not need to wait for a scheduled event.
Launceston College purposely does not issue the Options Form until students have had the opportunity to research and find out as much as they can about their chosen options. The Options Form will be issued on Monday 22nd February via the respective Year 9 Tutor Google Classroom and will also be available on the College website from this date. The deadline for receipt of all Options Forms will be Friday 5th March 2021 via google forms.
All students will study the core subjects; mathematics, English, science, either history or geography, PE, RE and IAG, alongside their options. Following the introduction of the English Baccalaureate, most students will study a language as well as 2 option subjects. We offer a broad range of subjects for students to make their choice from, in order to opt for a timetable that reflects their interests, career aspirations and preferred learning style.
The Options 2021 booklet is now on the College website along with a video to help explain the process for you to view. Should you wish to discuss this or any other matter, please do not hesitate to contact either your child’s tutor, Head of House or Mr Adams/ Mr Egford at the College.
