On Wednesday 1st of May, three Year 9 students (Theo Tambling, Theo Hosking, Josh Warburton) and English teacher Mrs Williams went to the Eden Project to participate in the Kernow Youth Book Awards ceremony (KYBA for short). Preparations started in December when the students began reading the six books which had been nominated for the short list. In their weekly meetings, the group would discuss the books they had read; after all the books had been read, it was time to choose their winner – the book ‘Ink’, by Alice Broadway.
On that Wednesday, they went down to Eden with around 30 other schools and listened to the authors and some schools give presentations about the books. At the end of the day, the host, Tim Bowler, announced the winner. Unfortunately the book ‘Ink’ didn’t win; the winner was ‘Between the Lies’, written by Catherine Macphail. The students had a wonderful day surrounded by people who love writing and the authors were genuinely overwhelmed at how much young people enjoyed their stories. The students were very excited to have their picture taken with their chosen author, Alice Broadway.
It was a really great experience and we can’t wait to get involved next year!
