Bunjakko Cottage Appeal Wine and Wisdom

Students at Launceston College will be returning to Uganda in 2020 to work with their partner school, Bunjakko Island Vocational School. This will be our third visit and will continue the work already completed to support the students and staff there. We have helped support the school in many ways over the years, including building new toilets, refurbishing the staff quarters, new laptops, text books, mosquito nets, clothes, stationary, solar panels etc.

During her visit in 2018 one student, Jess Hill realised the importance of female education. She has raised the money to visit the school again in 2020, with the aim of running a project for the girls at the school to raise awareness of this issue. This is intended to empower the girls and provide more opportunities for them to value themselves and be able to access education about health, amongst many other things.

With help from Launceston Rotary and Girl Guides South West, Jess has been making toiletry bags to take with her to help the students at the school. They will contain basic toiletry items and sanitary products. She is also fundraising to buy sewing machines, which will be used to make reusable sanitary towels, that the girls at the school can sell within the local community to provide an income. If you would like to donate any toiletry items that we can use to fill these bags, please take your donations to Launceston Travel in the arcade, who have very kindly offered to be collect these items for us. Alternatively, you can also drop them to reception at the College. We are looking for toothpaste, toothbrushes, flannels, soap, combs, hair bands, etc. As well as this, we are collecting new packs of pants & socks, many students and staff at the school desperately need these items. Again, these can be donated at the collection points.

This will be just one of many projects that we are planning as we move towards 2020 and our next visit to Bunjakko. The students are busy planning many events to raise money to support our visit, this includes a ‘Wine & Wisdom’ at the College on Friday 31st January. If you would like to book a table, please email £30 for a table of 6.

Thank you very much for your support.
